Spices and herbs are the essence of Indian cooking and add much more than just flavor – many also have unique health-promoting properties and have been used in holistic medicinal remedies for thousands of years.

At Green Coriander, we commonly use these spices and herbs:

Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, and has rich stores of antioxidants. Turmeric is thought to reduce inflammation and is known to help in fighting rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Cayenne is a pepper and is good for high blood pressure and helping to rid the body of LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. Cayenne is also great for the stomach and the intestinal tract.

Mustard Seed is a very good source of nutrients that have been shown to help reduce the severity of asthma, decrease some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and help prevent cancer and heart disease.

Cumin seeds contain a good amount of iron. Cumin also helps in digestion and in treatment of the common cold, when added to hot milk.

Coriander Seed is an important source of dietary fiber, iron, magnesium, and manganese. In holistic and traditional medicine, it is used as a carminative and as a digestive aid. Coriander seeds reduce fever, and promote a feeling of coolness.

Coriander Leaves act as stimulants and tonics. They strengthen the stomach and promote digestion by improving the discharge of urine. Coriander leaves, also known as cilantro, contain protein and fiber, and are rich in vitamin C and several minerals.

Ginger improves digestion, prevents and manages stomach ulcers, protects against symptoms of colds and flu, and stimulates blood circulation. It has also been shown to be a very potent inhibitor of inflammatory compounds that contribute to arthritis and rheumatic conditions. Ginger also reduces blood cholesterol by improving liver function.

Curry Leaves have anti-diabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. They are also good for digestion and for keeping hair healthy and long.
